Construction Project Breaks Ground At Hickory Point School

NORTHBROOK, IL — Students, staff and community members gathered Tuesday at Hickory Point School to celebrate the official groundbreaking of a two-year construction project that will expand and enhance the school’s facilities.

The work is part of a series of capital improvement projects funded by a referendum approved by Northbrook School District 27 voters in April 2025. District officials said the projects are designed to address long-term facility needs, improve safety across all three schools and enhance learning environments for students.

Construction at Hickory Point is scheduled to begin this summer and includes a 15,798-square-foot addition with multi-use space, sensory areas, classrooms and offices. The project will support the expansion of the school’s early childhood education program and provide a larger gymnasium.

Plans also include a new K-2 playground and a dedicated preschool playground. Both spaces will be designed to be inclusive and accessible for all students, according to the district.

“Today represents a significant step forward for our schools,” Superintendent Dr. John Deiter said in a statement. “We are confident these investments will deliver meaningful, lasting value for our students and a strong return for our community.”

As part of the groundbreaking celebration, Hickory Point students took turns shoveling dirt while the school community gathered to sing and mark the occasion.

“Thank you to our community and the District 27 Board of Education for your unwavering commitment to our school, our students, and our staff,” Hickory Point Principal Dr. Maureen Deely said. “These new spaces will create even more opportunities for our learners to experience joy, connection, and belonging each and every day.”

District-wide construction will take place during the summers of 2026 and 2027. Planned improvements include roof and HVAC replacements, technology infrastructure upgrades, new furniture and flooring, pavement replacement, safety and security enhancements, and a parking lot expansion at Wood Oaks.
