Hundreds Of Teens Flood Hazel Crest Park, Keep The Peace At Graduation Gathering: Police Chief

The police chief commended the teens for their conduct that kept the gathering safe and fun.

HAZEL CREST, IL — As some towns are on high alert about "teen takeovers" that lead to mayhem, one police chief is praising hundreds of teens in his town for their conduct at their own gathering.

On the evening of June 1, hundreds of teens convened in a Hazel Crest park for what they described as a "graduation gathering," Police Chief Mitchell Davis shared on Facebook.

Police from Hazel Crest, the Cook County Sheriff's Office and surrounding agencies responded to the scene—"to act as facilitators in ensuring the young people had a safe and enjoyable time, not as an authoritative force," Davis said.

The group did not have a permit and the gathering was thrown together on short notice, so limitations were placed on what was allowed in to the park, Davis said.

The event played out without any misconduct or disturbances, Davis said.

"Due to our officer's ability to properly communicate with key members of the gathering, and the willingness of a core group of young people, attendees in the massive group were able to enjoy themselves," Davis said.

There were no incidents of violence during or after the gathering, he added. The Department of Public Works assisted by directing traffic as attendees left afterward. While there was some traffic disruption for residents in the immediate area as the teens left the park, there were no major disruptions or disturbances, Davis said.

Davis applauded all those involved in overseeing and directing such a large group.

"Additionally, the young people that chose to have a peaceful gathering that allowed them to have safe fun should be commended," Davis said.

Residents who notice large gatherings such as this one developing are encouraged to notify the police department, Davis said.

At a teen gathering in Naperville earlier this week, police arrested five teens and four adults for violations that included battery, attempted aggravated assault on a peace officer and illegal possession of cannabis.

Naperville Police Chief Jason Arres issued a stern warning following the incident.

"We’ve been very clear on our stance," Arres said, as reported by Naperville Patch. "We want people to come to our city, patronize our businesses, and enjoy all the amenities Naperville has to offer. But if you break the law, there will be no warnings; there will be no second chances."
