Man Guilty In 'Brazen' Armed Robberies Of Armored Trucks, ATMs Gets 15 Years: U.S. Attorney

CHICAGO — A member of a crew that conspired to commit 11 brazen daytime robberies—including in Orland Park—has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

A federal jury in 2024 indicted 11 defendants—including two sets of brothers—for allegedly conspiring to violently rob armored trucks and ATMs in the Chicago south suburbs. Among them was Perry Maple, 23, of Chicago.

According to a previously unsealed indictment, the robbers brandished guns in 11 robberies and attempted robberies in 2022 and 2023. The heists and attempted heists occurred in Lansing, Country Club Hills, Orland Park, Homewood, Blue Island, Calumet City and Chicago Heights, and resulted in a total loss of at least $3.8 million, the indictment states.

Prosecutors said that between January 2022 and March 2023, Maple participated directly in three armed robberies of armored trucks and ATMs in Calumet City and Orland Park. During one armed robbery, Maple drove a stolen car to a bank in a crowded shopping plaza, shoved an ATM technician to the ground, and pointed a gun in the technician’s face as he and his co-defendant stole approximately $155,000 from the ATM.

Maple and his co-defendant committed the violent robbery on a Friday afternoon with innocent bystanders mere feet away. In the other two robberies, Maple acted as a getaway driver. Maple and his co-defendants stole nearly $700,000 during the three robberies, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office Northern District Of Illinois.

In June 2024, Maple and 10 other members of the armed robbery crew were charged in federal court in connection with 11 armed robberies of armored trucks, ATMs, and banks. On March 26, Maple pleaded guilty to federal charges of robbery and armed robbery, and on July 16, U.S. District Judge Robert W. Gettleman sentenced Maple to 15 years in prison.

"Along with his co-conspirators, defendant repeatedly and violently robbed armed armored truck couriers and ATM technicians at gunpoint," Assistant U.S. Attorney Zenner argued in the government’s sentencing memorandum. "Each robbery was a high-stakes, high-reward robbery, and defendant willingly risked getting into a deadly shootout for the chance at hundreds of thousands of dollars in stolen proceeds."
