15-Year-Old Boy Charged With First-Degree Murder: Palatine PD

Kevin K. Koonce, 20, of Streamwood, was found in a crashed car with a gunshot wound last month and later died at the hospital.

PALATINE, IL — A 15-year-old Palatine boy was arrested Thursday and charged with first-degree murder following an investigation into a homicide that occurred last month in the village.

Kevin K. Koonce, 20, of Streamwood, was found on the evening of March 16 by police in the 1200 block of E. Prairie Brook Drive. He had sustained a gunshot wound before driving his vehicle into multiple parked cars during the 9:39 p.m. incident.

Koonce was taken to an area hospital where he later died, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

At around 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Palatine police took the 15-year-old boy into custody without incident. The first-degree murder charge was approved by the Cook County State's Attorney's Office.

Following processing, police said the juvenile was taken to a Cook County juvenile detention center in Chicago. He is scheduled to appear in court for a hearing on Friday

Due to the the boy's age, police said no additional identifying information is being released at this time.

The Palatine Police Department thanked the Major Case Assistance Team (MCAT), the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS), and its partner agencies for their assistance during this investigation.
