The first day of school for Palos Heights Dist 128 grade K-8 students is Aug. 20. Preschool starts Aug. 27. More dates to know.

PALOS HEIGHTS, IL—Where did the summer go? Back-to-school planning is in full swing in Palos Heights SD 128 for the 2026-2027 academic school year, with calendars available to help parents prepare their students for a smooth transition into the new school year.

The first day of school for grades K-8 students is Aug. 20, with the first day of preschool on Aug. 27.

Some dates are subject to change during the school year. We also suggest that you check the Dist. 128 calendar or your child’s school (Indian Hill, Chippewa, Independence and Navajo Heights) for late starts, early dismissals, exams, open houses, athletic and school events, as well as your child's school.

Aug. 20 – First day for K-8 students, early dismissal noon

Aug. 27 - First day of preschool

Sept. 7 – Labor Day, no school

Oct. 9 – Parent-Teacher conferences, student non-attendance day

Oct. 12 – Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples' Day, no school

Nov. 3 - Teacher institute, no student attendance

Nov. 23 through Nov. 27 – Fall/Thanksgiving break, no school

Nov. 30 - School resumes

Dec. 22 - Early dismissal: Navajo 1:15 p.m., Independence 1:25 p.m.; Indian Hill K/PM PreK and Chippewa 1:30 p.m.; and PreK 10 a.m..

Dec. 23 through Jan. 5– Winter Break, no school

Jan. 6 – School resumes

Jan. 18 – Martin Luther King Jr. Day, no school

Feb. 15 – Presidents’ Day, no school

March 10 - Eid al-Fitr, no school

March 26 through April 5 - Spring Break

April 6 - Teacher Institute, Consolidated Election, no student attendance

April 7 - School resumes

May 17 – Eid al-Adha, no school

May 31 - Memorial Day

June 3 – Last day for K-8 students, early dismissal noon
