Intense Heat And Humidity Linger: Where To Find Cooling Centers In Palos

PALOS, IL—Intense heat and humidity are expected to linger Wednesday, as the National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory in effect from noon to 9 p.m.

The weather service said hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses, with heat index values of 100 to 110 expected.

If your power goes out, your air conditioner breaks, you don’t have air, or you just want to give your electric bill a break, here are cooling centers where you can escape the heat in the Palos communities.

• Kaptur Administration Building (if needed), 8999 W. 123rd St., Palos Park
• Palos Park Metra Station, 123rd Street and 82nd Avenue
• Palos Park Recreation Center, 8901 W. 123rd St.
• Palos Heights Recreation Center, 6601 W. 127th St.
• Palos Hills Parks & Recreation Department, 8455 W. 103rd St.
• Green Hills Library District, 10221 Interlochen Drive, Palos Hills. The library will be closed for necessary parking lot repairs July 2 through July 5.

The magnitude of anticipated heat, combined with oppressive warmth at night, will lead to hazardous conditions, particularly for the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions.

The Palos Heights Recreation Center is the city’s official cooling facility, providing air-conditioned relief during extreme heat. You can view updates or alerts directly via the City of Palos Heights Alert Center.

The Palos Hills Parks and Recreation Department will be open during regular business hours.

Palos Park police will be conducting well-being checks on older residents who are participating in the police department’s “You Are Not Alone” program.

“If you are worried about a homebound neighbor or senior, call us at 708-448 2191 and we will conduct a well-being check,” said Chief Joe Miller of the Palos Park Police Department.

The Cook County Department of Homeland Security also has a list of cooling centers for suburban Cook County and the City of Chicago, which may open on a 24/7 basis if needed.

Residents are advised to call ahead to make sure the cooling center is open.
