Western Springs Wildlife Sightings Prompt Fence Work

WESTERN SPRINGS, IL – Wildlife sightings are increasing near a community building in Western Springs, causing officials to plan a fence to keep out the animals.

The concern is at the village's recreation center at 1500 Walker St., which is just east of Interstate 294.

"The toddler playground, which is intended for use by Recreation Center visitors, as well as by the preschool students housed in the Recreation Center, has shown signs of an uptick in wildlife visitors since the Tollway removed nearby trees and brush as part of the expansion project," the village's spokesperson, Selmin Cicek, said in an email to Patch on Monday. "Fence installation will better ensure the safety and cleanliness of the playground area."

Asked about the type of wildlife, Cicek said rabbits, raccoons and coyotes are most likely being seen, but deer could be a possibility.

Village officials are poised to choose the low bid of $35,000 for the new fence.
