String Of Wilmette Vehicle Burglaries Under Investigation

A string of vehicle burglaries that happened overnight in Wilmette this week is under investigation, police said.

WILMETTE, IL — The Wilmette Police Department is investigating a string of vehicle burglaries that took place overnight over the weekend.

According to authorities, one suspect was seen on surveillance video in the 2800 block of Old Glenview Road. The person was seen smashing car windows and taking valuables from inside.

Similar crimes have taken place in nearby communities.

In Skokie, a string of vehicle burglaries happened overnight one night at the beginning of April. A majority of the burglarized vehicles had a window broken and easily carried items and cash were taken.

In response to the incidents, authorities shared some tips to minimize vehicle burglary:

  • Park vehicles in a well-lit area near motion -ensor lights and away from shrubs or bushes.
  • Lock vehicle doors and make sure windows are fully closed.
  • Remove valuables, vehicle fobs and excess items from the vehicle, paticularly items that can be seen through windows.
  • Ensure vehicle alarms or video systems are turned on.

Victims of burglary were advised to call 911 immediately and wait for an officer to respond instead of confronting anyone. It's also best not to enter the car or touch anything until police respond to preserve evidence at the scene.
