Winnetka Estate Up for Local Landmark Designation

WINNETKA, IL — A prominent Winnetka estate at 115 DeWindt Road is set to go before the Village Council on Tuesday night as officials consider adding the property to the village’s list of landmark buildings.

The application was submitted by property owners Matt and Gina Dillig, who bought the home in 2021 for $5 million, according to Redfin. Redfin estimates the seven-bedroom, 8.5-bathroom estate is worth more than $7 million.

The Historic Preservation Commission found the house significant and more than satisfactory under the criteria for local landmark designation. The commission voted unanimously to recommend that the Village Council designate the property as a local landmark after identifying it as a signature design of local architect Denison B. Hull.

According to the commission, the home was built in 1936 in the Georgian Revival style and was designed by Hull, who lived there. The commission found the residence to be an excellent example of that style and said it remains well preserved. The house was built with brick and reinforced concrete, which the commission noted was rare for the time, and that the exterior brick pattern is distinctive.

Hull had a distinguished reputation for architectural design, academic scholarship and civic participation, much of it centered in Illinois and the Chicago region. The commission identified the home as a prominent and recognizable property in its neighborhood and as the original residence of a larger estate that once comprised the area.

Based on those findings, the commission gave the property a System for Evaluation rating of “Unique,” with a score of “87,” before forwarding its recommendation to the Village Council.

“Lived in and lovingly enhanced by four prominent families over almost a century, the home comprises 10,500 square feet over three levels of meticulously finished luxury living space surrounded by lush outdoor spaces that bestow the home with privacy, comfort, and open-air allurem,” the home’s website said.

Tuesday night’s council meeting will take place at Village Hall at 510 Green Bay Road at 7 p.m.
