Head-On Crash In Southern MD Sends 3 To Hospitals
Authorities said speed and alcohol were likely factors in the Friday crash in Piney Point.
ST. MARY'S COUNTY, MD — A head-on crash in St. Mary's County left one driver with life-threatening injuries and two others hurt, according to the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office. Authorities suspect speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.
Deputies responded to the intersection of Piney Point Road and Drayden Road in Piney Point shortly before 4 p.m., where they found two trucks involved in a head-on collision. Two people were trapped inside the trucks, and one driver was unconscious when deputies arrived.
A preliminary investigation found that a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado driven by a 38-year-old Leonardtown man was traveling north on Piney Point Road when it crossed the center line and continued onto the southbound shoulder. The pickup then tried to re-enter the roadway and collided head-on with a 2021 Ford F-250 driven by a 63-year-old Piney Point man driving south.

The driver of the Chevy was flown by Maryland State Police Aviation Command Trooper 7 to a trauma center with life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Ford and a passenger were taken by ambulance to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. The Sheriff's Office said all three people were in stable condition.

Preliminary findings indicate speed and alcohol were factors in the crash. Patch is not identifying the drivers because, as of Saturday, charges had not been filed in the case.
The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating.
