New Storms Threaten MD As Thousands Remain Without Power

While the biggest storm threat to the region has passed, Mother Nature isn't quite done with Maryland just yet.

The latest forecast released by the National Weather Service keeps the majority of the Old Line State under a hazardous weather outlook on Tuesday.

Authorities warn that scattered and severe thunderstorms forecast on Tuesday could bring damaging wind gusts of up to 70 mph to the Baltimore region.

Isolated chances for flash flooding are also possible during the afternoon and evening as the state sees humid conditions and temperatures ranging between 80 and 90 degrees.

Going into Wednesday, Marylanders may encounter thunderstorms between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m., with showers potentially impacting the morning commute before 7 a.m.

Storm chances continue through the week, but the biggest chance for severe weather could develop Sunday night going into Monday, according to forecasters.

Storm Damages

From severe thunderstorms to flooding and tornado warnings, Monday's rounds of severe storms prompted multiple NWS alerts throughout the day.

Damages reported across the state included downed trees, roadway flooding, stranded vehicles and power outages. Forecasters recorded hourly rainfall rates of 3 inches.

In Montgomery County, two construction workers were swung around after a scaffolding collapse.

Both were able to get to safety by breaking through an apartment window. No injuries were reported in the incident.

Power Outages

Figures released by the BGE electric utility show thousands remain without power as emergency crews work to clear debris and downed trees.

As of this article's publishing, over 4,800 BGE customers remain without electricity, with Baltimore and Howard counties accounting for the highest numbers of outages.

The National Weather Service described Monday's severe weather in both counties as being a particularly "destructive storm."

BGE said it expects to restore power to 80% of its Maryland customer base by 9 p.m. Tuesday, and the remaining by Wednesday night.

"BGE crews are actively responding to power outages caused by extensive damage from severe weather," reads an advisory by the utility.

Any BGE customers experiencing a power outage are encouraged to report the incident through the online portal or by calling (877) 778-2222. Residents can also alert officials by texting OUT to 69243 or through the company's mobile app.
