Crews Working To Repair Massive Baltimore Sinkhole That Swallowed Car

BALTIMORE, MD — Repair work is underway after a massive sinkhole developed in East Baltimore over the weekend, swallowing a car and its driver in the process.

The Baltimore Police Department told CBS Baltimore the incident occurred early Saturday near the intersection of North Chester Street and Ashland Avenue. The 50-year-old woman driving the vehicle was able to get out of the sinkhole without injury, police said.

The woman's car has since been pulled out of the sinkhole as repair work begins.

Repair Work Timeline

Matt Garbark, director of the Baltimore Department of Public Works, said in a video update that repair work at the site would take several days as it involves a water main and a large storm drain.

"At this point, we are working to prioritize getting folks back into water. Once we do that we will assess the damage to the storm drain and we will start making the final repairs," he said.

"We expect this to be a multi-day repair effort, and the roadways in this area will remain closed."

Road Closures And Detours

The latest road closures announced by the Baltimore City Department of Transportation include:

• North Chester Street from Eager to Madison Streets
• Ashland Avenue from North Collington to North Castle Streets

The following detour routes have been established by the agency:

• Westbound Ashland Avenue traffic will be detoured south on N. Collington, west on Madison, north on Washington, back to Ashland.
• Northbound Chester Street traffic will be detoured west on Madison, north on Washington, east on Eager, back to Chester.
• Eastbound Ashland Avenue traffic will be detoured south on N. Castle, east on Monument, north on Washington, back to Ashland
• Southbound Chester Street traffic will be detoured west on Eager, south on Wolfe, east on Monument, back to Chester.
