Former Lacrosse Player ID'd As Driver Killed In Elkridge Car Crash

ELLICOTT CITY, MD — Authorities have identified the driver killed in a single-vehicle crash that happened Sept. 18.

At around 9:48 p.m. Sept. 18, a 2013 Nissan Juke was heading north on Ilchester Road between Jeans Way and Bonnie Branch Road when it veered off the road and hit a tree, according to Howard County Police.

The driver and only person in the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

Howard County Police has identified that driver as Kaio Cypress, 18, of Elkridge.

Cypress graduated in May from Howard High School, where he was a defenseman on the varsity boys lacrosse team. The high school lacrosse team posted on Instagram about the loss of their former teammate and player.

"Our Howard Lacrosse family is heartbroken to learn of the passing of former Lion Kaio Cypress, Class of 2026. Kaio was a fierce competitor who played the game with tremendous passion and toughness. He brought an intensity to the field and a competitive spirit that represented what it meant to wear a Howard jersey. Once a Lion, always a Lion, and he will forever be a part of our program," the post stated.
