MCPS Bus Driver Dead After Gaithersburg Crash: Police

Montgomery County Police said the crash took place in Gaithersburg, in the area of Central Avenue.

GAITHERSBURG, MD — A school bus driver is dead after crashing into a utility pole in Gaithersburg on Tuesday, police said.

Montgomery County Police said the incident occurred just after 3 p.m. along the intersection of Central Avenue and Route 355, near Bohrer Park.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

"The death is being handled as a medical emergency," the department said in a post.

Authorities said no students were on the bus when the crash unfolded.

No additional details were released about the collision.

Road closures remain in place until further notice on Central Avenue from Poplarwood Place to Paradise Court.

Tuesday marked the first day of school for all students enrolled in the Montgomery County Public Schools system.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
