Man Pleads Guilty To Deadly Glen Burnie Home Invasion

GLEN BURNIE, MD — Andrew Raquan Riggs, a 28-year-old Middle River man, pleaded guilty in the case of a deadly home invasion that occurred in Glen Burnie, authorities said Thursday.

A release by the Office of the State's Attorney detailed that Riggs pleaded guilty Wednesday to first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in a violent crime.

Court records show Riggs had been facing over a dozen charges in the case, including first-degree burglary, two counts of armed robbery, and first-degree assault, among other offenses.

The case dates back to Aug. 31, 2022, when Riggs and a second individual orchestrated a home invasion in Glen Burnie on the 400 block of M Street NE.

Matthew Ponder, who suffered a fatal gunshot wound, and an unidentified woman were inside the home at the time of the incident. The 27-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene after first responders were alerted to the shooting shortly before 2:30 a.m.

Video surveillance reviewed by investigators revealed that Riggs and a second person were seen parked near the home prior to approaching the home several times and covering a rear camera with a plastic bag. The pair were later seen driving away from the scene after the shooting.

Riggs was tied to the case through digital evidence, which not only placed him in the vicinity of the home invasion, but also showed he'd searched Ponder's address and the value of a "1950 ten-dollar bill" after the shooting, according to prosecutors.

The woman who was in the home when the residence was stormed said the individuals had stolen various items, including "older and collectible" currency.

Riggs remains held without bond and is scheduled to appear for sentencing Nov. 19.
