Chickens Die After Warming Lamp Sparks Garage Fire

A flock of chickens died after a heat lamp caught hay on fire in a garage where they were kept, fire investigators say.

ABERDEEN, MD — Ten chickens died after the 7x22-foot garage they were housed in caught on fire Sunday night.

A heat lamp keeping the flock of chickens warm ignited hay around 11:22 p.m., according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office. More than two dozen firefighters from the Level Volunteer Fire Company were able to stop the fire below it spread to a nearby RV and the home, the fire marshal's office stated.

The garage, located in the 600 block of Mahan Road, along with all of its contents are a complete loss. The estimated loss has been pegged at $1,000.
