Former Bed And Breakfast Damaged By Fire In Havre De Grace

HARVE DE GRACE, MD — A fire broke out at the former Currier House Bed and Breakfast in Havre de Grace early Monday morning.

The two-story structure, built in the 1790s in the Federal style, currently is being renovated and no one was in the home at the time of the fire. The blaze was discovered by a passerby, officials noted.

The fire broke out shortly before 7:30 a.m. at the home, which is located at 800 Market Street. Approximately 50 firefighters battled the blaze with the primarily responding fire department being the Susquehanna Hose Company. They spent 30 minutes reigning in the fire.

According to the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal, the fire alarms and sprinklers didn't activate because the fire broke out in the space between the first-floor floor joists. They believe it was caused due to an electrical failure.

The fire originally started there, then spread to the exterior wall and upward to the second floor. However, the state fire marshal's office has estimated loss at $150,000 due to extensive damage caused by smoke, soot and water damage from a ruptured water pipe.
