Laurel Military Academy Issues Food Quarantine After Multiple Cadets Sickened

LAUREL, MD — A food quarantine was issued at the Capital Guardian Youth ChalleNGe Academy in Laurel after multiple cadets became ill over the weekend during lunch and were hospitalized.

A spokesperson for the academy told Patch that in addition to the 19 cadets who were hospitalized Sunday, six cadets were transported to an area medical facility on Monday for further evaluation.

Authorities have not yet pinpointed the source of the illnesses, although a food quarantine remains in place as the investigation progresses.

One 16-year-old cadet who spoke with WUSA9 said that he felt lightheaded and dizzy after the lunch, and that it wasn't until people moved into a gym area that many began to vomit.

Doctors who treated the teen said he had suffered from carbon monoxide levels that "weren't dangerously high," his mother told the outlet.

Carbon monoxide poisoning was previously ruled out as a possible cause by first responders on Sunday.

The academy said it has contracted an independent company to conduct additional water, air and environmental testing at the campus.
