Join Us for July Jubilation!
On Sunday, July 5 from 1PM-4PM, the Odenton Heritage Society (OHS) invites you to July Jubilation as we celebrate America’s 250th and Odenton’s connections to the 18th century.
Visit the OHS Historical Center to enjoy festive red, white, and blue ice cream. See historical objects and displays such as iron products made at a pre–Revolutionary War ironworks, an inscribed boundary stone marking an estate owned by a prominent Annapolis family and learn about a ca. 1792 Quaker meeting house that later formed the nucleus of a nearby African American community. Also on display will be a collection of Watts family picker's checks, coin-like tokens used to pay farm laborers to harvest truck crops such as delicious Anne Arundel strawberries.
A highlight of the day will be a guided bus tour of historic sites in Odenton, including a special stop at the former USNA Dairy Farm once owned by the prominent Annapolis Hammond family. Through images of relics, grave markers, and a now-lost mansion, visitors can discover the Hammond family’s contributions, including the Revolutionary War exploits and Gambrills burial place of Matthias Hammond, owner of the Hammond-Harwood House in Annapolis.
Tour participants will meet inside the Historical Center at 1:30 PM for a brief introduction. The tour will then depart at 2PM and lasts approximately one hour. Please note: the bus is not air-conditioned, so plan accordingly for warm July weather.
Please pre-register by email to odentonheritage@gmail.com with the number of attendees for the bus tour. The OHS Historical Center, located at 1367 Odenton Road, is home to the OHS community history museum. We welcome visitors during our Open Houses on the first Sunday of each month from 1PM–4PM. As always, admission and guided tours are free.
We look forward to celebrating with you!
