The Sickle Cell Disease Association of America Inc., a national nonprofit membership organization that advocates for people affected by sickle cell disease, will hold the Warrior Walkathon on Saturday, July 18, from 9 a.m. to noon at Lake Montebello in Baltimore.

“SCDAA is excited to host our 13th annual walkathon, again in Baltimore,” said Regina Hartfield, president and CEO of the association. “It’s a great opportunity to make a difference. Join us to raise vital funds in support of a universal cure. Walk alongside sickle cell warriors, caregivers, families, friends, community organizations, sororities, fraternities, industry leaders and supporters of the sickle cell community.”

For over a decade, the annual walkathon — formerly named Walk with the Stars — has raised more than $500,000 to support improvements in the quality of health, life and services for individuals, families and communities affected by sickle cell disease.

The Warrior Walkathon will begin with a warmup followed by the walk and awards ceremony. Participants can create and promote personal fundraising webpages to raise money for the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America Inc. and those affected by sickle cell disease.

The walkathon is free to attend, but registration is required. Participants who raise over $25 receive a T-shirt. Sickle cell disease is a rare inherited blood disease causing red blood cells to take a sickle shape, which leads to blockages that prevent blood from reaching parts of the body. As a result, people with sickle cell complications can experience anemia, jaundice, gallstones, stroke, chronic pain, organ damage and premature death. More than 100,000 Americans live with sickle cell disease, and 2 million Americans have sickle cell trait. No universal cure exists.

Warrior Walkathon to support Sickle Cell Disease Association of America

Kiddie Academy of Owings Mills will host Hero Play Day on Saturday, July 18 at 10 a.m. for infants to 12-year-olds. Families are invited to attend this free community event designed to help children recognize and celebrate their personal heroes.

The new hands-on event will be an opportunity for children to dress up as their favorite superhero and participate in “training” stations set up around the Academy, including obstacle courses, strength tests and kindness missions.

The annual Purcellville Wine and Food Festival returns on Saturday, July 18, in Dillon’s Woods at the historic Fireman’s Field Complex (250 S. Nursery Avenue, Purcellville). The festival will take place from 2 to 8 p.m., inviting guests to gather with family and friends for an afternoon and evening of local wine, beer, food, live music, art, and more.
This year’s event will showcase 40 vendors, including wineries, breweries, food and snack vendors, and local exhibitors. Enjoy live music performances by the Rick Reaves Band, The Darby Brothers, and the Franklin Park Big Band. The “Arts in the Garden” section, hosted by the Purcellville Arts Council, will highlight local artists who will create works of art live on-site. Additional activities include face painting and a photo stand-in booth. 
Early bird ticket pricing is available through 5 p.m. on July 17: 
• Early bird admission (ages 17 and over): $5 (+ tax) 
• Early bird drink tickets (6 oz wine or 12 oz beer): $8.50 (+ tax) 
• Early bird drink ticket package: 4 tickets for $32 (+ tax) 
• Early bird bottle of wine purchase: $35 (+ tax), available from participating wineries (bottles must be consumed on-site)
A souvenir glass will be provided with the purchase of the first drink ticket. Save time and money by purchasing your tickets in advance. 
The popular VIP experience returns for $275 (+ tax) and includes admission for six, a reserved table for six, three bottles of local wine, six souvenir glasses, six drink tickets, early entry to the festival, special commemorative gifts, and a selection of sweets and savories for the table.
