Montgomery County Police Chief Resigns Effective Immediately

ROCKVILLE, MD — Montgomery County Police Chief Marc Yamada has resigned effective immediately from his post, it was announced Friday.

The resignation was confirmed by County Executive Marc Elrich.

"We thank him for nearly four decades of service to MCPD and our residents," Elrich said in a statement.

"This resignation is effective immediately, and I have selected Assistant Chief Darren Francke to serve as Acting Chief of Police until a permanent Chief is appointed."

Neither Erlich nor the department's official statement on the resignation provided an explanation for Yamada's resignation.

In its separate statement, MCPD said the department would "continue its day-to-day operations and remain focused on serving Montgomery County" amid the "leadership transition."

The agency said it would be releasing additional details at a later time.

Yamada has been with the Montgomery County Police Department since 1988. He took over as police chief following the January 2024 retirement of former Police Chief Marcus Jones.

The outgoing police chief was nominated by Erlich for the police chief position and later unanimously approved by the Montgomery County Council in June 2024.
