From local fields to national fame, these stars got their start in Westminster.

Sports run deep in Westminster, and Winters Mill High School has long been at the heart of it. It’s no surprise some standout talent once wore the Falcons uniform. Today we're celebrating five unforgettable athletes from Winters Mill High School who made a name for themselves well beyond the hometown field.
1. Isaiah Pasteur – MLB Player (New York Yankees)
A talent at Winters Mill High School, Pasteur was widely considered the top player in Carroll County, batting .483 with a county-best fastball that earned him All-State honors. After starting his college career at Indiana University, he transferred to George Washington University, where he was named the 2018 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and set a program record with a 32-game hitting streak. He was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 13th round of the 2018 MLB Draft and played three seasons in their minor league system; he has since transitioned from professional play and remains a celebrated figure in Maryland’s baseball community. 2. Sophia M. Barnes – Multi-Sport Star Athlete
Barnes is a former women’s lacrosse attacker from Winters Mill High School in Westminster, Maryland, where she was a leading scorer and multi‑sport competitor on varsity lacrosse, soccer and basketball while earning academic honors. After graduating in the Class of 2021, Barnes went on to continue her lacrosse career at the University of York (a Division III program), where she played at the collegiate level following her high school success as an attacker. 3. Jadon E. Webb – Track & Field Star
Webb is a former track and field athlete who attended Winters Mill High School in Westminster, Maryland, where he competed in the triple jump, sprint events and earned recognition advancing to state-level competition as part of the Class of 2021. His high school track profile lists him as a triple jumper with a personal best of around 40ft and as a 100m runner during his school career. 4. Matt Witte – Collegiate Baseball Pitcher
A versatile athlete at Winters Mill High School, Witte served as a two-year starting catcher and team captain, earning the Silver Falcon Award for leadership and leading the county in doubles. He continued his career at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), where he successfully transitioned from a catcher to the team's primary starting pitcher, leading the Hawks in strikeouts and complete games as a senior. After a successful collegiate career as the Hawks' primary starting pitcher, he returned to Westminster to earn two master's degrees and serve as a teacher and baseball coach within Carroll County Public Schools. 5. Keith Claiborne Jr. – Professional Basketball Player (International)
A First Team All-County guard at Winters Mill High School, where his high-scoring performances earned him First Team All-County honors and solidified his reputation as a top playmaker in the MVAL-Blue Ridge conference, Claiborne Jr. played at Frederick Community College and Hood College before moving overseas to play professionally for the Cardiff Metropolitan Archers in the United Kingdom. During his time abroad, he earned a master’s degree in Sports Coaching and led his team to a BUCS Western 1A championship. He currently resides in Maryland, where he serves as the Athletic Director and Head Boys’ Basketball Coach at Springdale Preparatory School.
