Frost Threat Across MA Amid Early October Cold Snap: See Latest Forecast

Some low-lying Greater Boston suburbs and parts of Vermont and New Hampshire could dip into the 20s on Tuesday night.

Many Greater Boston suburban residents will need to bundle up — and protect delicate, exposed plants and flowers — on Tuesday night as some of the coldest air of the past six months brings frost potential to New England.

While the forecast low in Boston will hold in the low 40s, according to the National Weather Service, areas just outside of the city could be 10 degrees or more colder under clear skies and calming winds.

Those with delicate vegetation should bring it inside or cover it as a precaution, even though a hard freeze is not expected for most.

"Early-season frost advisories are often one of the first clear signs that fall is settling in, and this cooldown could bring frost or freeze conditions as early as Monday morning from parts of the Great Lakes into the interior Northeast," said AccuWeather expert meteorologist Dan Pydynowski earlier this week. "It is a familiar rite of passage each fall that can have significant impacts on sensitive vegetation and the growing season."

The wintery blast will be short-lived, as warmer weather returns ahead of what should at least start off as a quintessential fall New England weekend.

Highs will peak in the 70s on Thursday before a slight cooldown has temperatures in the 60s under sunny skies on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Tropical moisture could be a dampener on those with plans for the tail end of what is a holiday weekend for some, as the threat of showers looms for Monday.
