Major Job Cuts Hit Massachusetts In 2026
More than 5,000 layoffs have been reported to the state in the first five months of 2026.
The first five months of 2026 have seen mounting job losses across Massachusetts as major companies close stores and some banks close branches.
Through May 31, there have been 5,504 layoffs announced, according to WARN notices filed with the state Department of Labor.
The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, or WARN, requires employers with 100 or more employees to provide 60 days' advance written notice of plant closings or mass layoffs.

According to Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notices filed with the state, among the recent cuts are:
- Littleton, where equestrian products company Dover Saddlery plans to eliminate 112 jobs between July 7 and July 20;
- Peabody, where a publisher of religious materials, Christianbook, said it will cut 50 jobs by July 6; and
- Tewksbury, where the national pharmacy services company Cardinal Health intends to make 58 cuts before June 30.
In addition, another Bay State health care company that previously announced 78 layoffs, Community Healthlink, said that number had increased to 84 cuts planned by July 6.

The unemployment rate in April is 4.7 percent — slightly higher than the 4.3 percent nationwide.
