A crippling blizzard buried Massachusetts under snow, knocking out power to thousands of residents and forcing the cancellation of hundreds of Boston Logan Airport flights.

The state remains under a blizzard warning until 7 a.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

In that time, between 8 and 18 inches of snow will fall across Massachusetts with winds gusting up to 55 mph, the National Weather Service forecast said.

Once the snow stops Tuesday, expect sunny skies and the temperature to climb from a Monday night low of 18 degrees to 29, but another inch to 3 inches of snow will fall Wednesday and even more snow is predicted for Thursday.

In the meantime, the National Weather Service encourages residents to stay home.

"Travel should be restricted to emergencies only," the National Weather Service warned. "If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle."

Those looking to travel can't get far anyway, as nearly 1,000 Boston Logan Flights were canceled.

"Due to the forecasted storm, airlines are canceling flights on Monday and may be waving change fees," according to a Massachusetts Port Authority weather advisory. "Passengers are advised to check with their airline on the status of their flight before coming to the airport."

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency showed thousands of residents across the state have lost power.

"Damaging winds and heavy snow causing widespread outages," Eversource energy provider said on its website.
