Water To Rise 1 Ft Above Ground In Low-Lying Areas, Breaking Waves Expected Up To 6 to 15 Feet In MA: NWS

BOSTON, MA — Water is expected to rise in coastal areas up to one foot above ground-level in low-lying areas, and breaking waves, to reach six to 15 feet in surf zones, resulting in minor flooding as the nor'easter peters out in Massachusetts, the National Weather Service said.

The announcement was made in a coastal flood warning and high surf advisory that is in effect until 8 p.m. in effect in Suffolk, Barnstable, Dukes, Nantucket, and eastern Essex, Norfolk, and Plymouth counties.

Strong northeast winds with large waves will result in minor coastal flooding with pockets of moderate coastal flooding over multiple high tide cycles throughout the rest of the weekend.

The water may also struggle to vacate the area after the tides, given persistent strong northeast winds. The greatest risk for coastal flooding appears to be setting up south of Boston to the Cape and islands.

The long duration of northeast winds, coupled with large waves over multiple high tide cycles, will result in areas of severe beach erosion for a prolonged period.
