12 Rescued Sea Turtles Released Into Waters Off Cape Cod

CAPE COD, MA — A dozen rescued sea turtles were released into the waters off Cape Cod following their recovery.

"After months of rehabilitation at our Sea Turtle Hospital, 12 sea turtles were released this week into the waters off Cape Cod," the New England Aquarium said in a social media post.

The 12 turtles — five Kemp’s ridleys, four loggerheads and three green sea turtles — were among hundreds "cold-stunned" and rescued from Cape Cod beaches during the winter.

The turtles suffered from such ailments as pneumonia, dehydration and trauma, according to the post, and were treated and recovered prior to their release.

"Before their release, researchers from our Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life fitted the turtles with satellite and acoustic tags to help us learn more about sea turtle behavior, habitat use, and survival in New England waters," the release said.
