Just In Time For Summer, 'Hazardous' Barnstable Playground Is Again Preparing For Play

BARNSTABLE, MA — After almost a year of reconstruction – and more than two years since it was closed due to "hazardous conditions" – an upgraded playground here is preparing to welcome its first players.

The children's recreation space at 524 Main St. in Centerville should open in a few weeks, the Barnstable Department of Public Works said Wednesday.

The reimagined facility has a nautical theme, including a customized wooden "ship" and a play structure that resembles a crab trap.

There's accessible equipment designed for children and families of all abilities, the town said in a news release. An adjacent retaining wall and parking area are also being upgraded.

Barnstable closed the playground in February 2024, following longstanding community demands for its renovation. That was originally expected to be complete last summer.

The town says it has worked closely with neighbors and local groups to overhaul the space. Officials will soon announce the playground's reopening date, but asked the public not to enter the site until the work is complete.

There will be a rededication of the Centerville Playground over the summer, the news release said.
