The man, who worked on the Norwegian Breakaway, was spotted falling into the waters off Cape Cod late Saturday night.

CAPE COD, MA — Searches have been called off for a man who went overboard from a cruise ship near Cape Cod late Saturday night, according to multiple reports.

The unidentified crew member of the Norwegian Breakaway was seen on a ship security camera falling from an upper deck into the water shortly after midnight, about 12 miles east of Wellfleet.

The 4,000-passenger ship, which was on its way from Bermuda to Boston, turned around and launched boats to look for the man. A Coast Guard boat and helicopter quickly launched a search and distributed life rings.

Both searches were suspended by Sunday afternoon. Because of the emergency and investigation, the Norwegian Breakaway was several hours late in reaching Boston and passengers were detained onboard.

The ship’s operator, Norwegian Cruise Lines, has not released the name of the crew member or disclosed details of the incident.
