MCC Hires New Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs

Middlesex Community College is excited to announce Dr. Sue Maggioni as the new Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs. Bringing more than 15 years of teaching and leadership in higher education, she most recently served as Assistant Provost at MassBay Community College. At Middlesex, she looks forward to engaging with and supporting the community.

“I love and share in the college’s mission of student success, academic excellence, workforce-responsive education, and community engagement,” Dr. Maggioni said. “MCC has an energy and enthusiasm that lets students, employees and community members explore, learn and thrive. I see my role as one of support for faculty and staff who are working to provide students with the education they have come to MCC to receive and the growth we’re helping them achieve while they’re here with us and wherever they go next.”

Holding a Ph.D. in Philosophy from The Pennsylvania State University, Dr. Maggioni earned a J.D. from Duke University School of Law and a B.A. in Philosophy from Trinity College. Her first job after earning her bachelor’s degree was in Trinity’s alumni office, where she developed a love for higher education that has stayed with her throughout her career.

In her role as Assistant Provost at MassBay, Dr. Maggioni provided senior academic leadership across a broad portfolio including Online Learning, the Academic Achievement Center, Accessibility Resources, Library Services, and the Center for Teaching and Learning. She led collegewide efforts that aligned academic and student support services to improve student persistence, completion, and overall success.

Throughout her career, Dr. Maggioni advanced faculty development efforts focused on inclusive teaching and innovative instructional practices. She guided institutional assessment and accreditation efforts and advanced workforce-focused programs that respond to regional labor market needs.

With a leadership approach grounded in transparency, shared governance, and respect for faculty and staff, Dr. Maggioni brings extensive experience working across divisions. Her ability to build strong partnerships among the Offices of Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Enrollment, and Institutional Research reflects a collaborative philosophy that aligns with MCC's mission and strategic priorities, according to Phil Sisson, MCC’s President.

“Dr. Maggioni has a strong record of advancing student success, strengthening academic quality, and fostering collaborative, inclusive practices,” President Sisson said. “Her vision for Academic Affairs emphasizes the integration of academic and co-curricular experiences, the advancement of career-connected learning, and the importance of data-informed, student-centered decision-making. She is deeply committed to ensuring that students experience the college as a cohesive and supportive environment, where academic excellence and student support work hand-in-hand to promote success and opportunity.”

Looking ahead, Dr. Maggioni plans to focus on expanding supports for MCC adult learners and increasing the availability of career opportunities in the classroom. This includes offering more apprenticeship and internship experiences, as well as strengthening pathways from MCC to a student’s transfer institution or the workforce.

“For the Fall semester, we are developing and launching some exciting new programs that will meet the needs of our students and community,” she said. “I am also looking forward to meeting the community and learning what makes them passionate about the work they do.”
