'Problem Is Widespread': Beverly Teachers Decry Racist, Hateful Bathroom Graffiti

BEVERLY, MA — The Beverly Teachers Association said it is "deeply disturbed" by what it calls "widespread" incidents of racist and hateful graffiti found in the middle school bathrooms — including those that specifically targeted a school educator.

The BTA said the incidents have spanned "more than one grade level."

"Every person deserves to work and learn in an environment free from intimidation, harassment, and hate," the BTA said in a statement released on social media on Monday. "Acts that target individuals based on their actual or perceived religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, identity, or any other protected characteristic have no place in our schools or our community."

The BTA said that while the union appreciated that the incidents have been referred to police for investigation, it is calling for "a thorough review of district safety measures and a clear plan to ensure the protection of all staff and students."

"Our union stands in solidarity with the affected educator and with every member of our school community who has been impacted by these events," the BTA statement said. "We remain committed to advocating for safe schools, respectful learning environments, and prompt, meaningful responses to hate-based conduct.

"We encourage anyone with information related to these incidents to cooperate fully with investigators."
