Boston Drag And Burlesque Show Inspired By Popular Grocery Store Chain

BOSTON, MA — A cabaret inspired by one of New England's most recognizable grocery store chains is coming to Boston next month, bringing drag, burlesque, live singing, and a rotisserie chicken-eating competition to the stage.

"Market Rate: After Hours at New England's Favorite Regional Grocery Store" is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 23, at Jacques Cabaret on 79 Broadway St.

The event, presented by performers Bimbette, Crow Morbid and Gnat, will feature two shows after organizers added a second seating. The first show will begin at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6 p.m., followed by a second performance at 10 p.m., with doors opening at 9:30 p.m. Both shows are limited to those 21 and older.

"You won’t want to miss this show, featuring drag, burlesque, live singing, and more!" organizers wrote in announcing the cast and additional seating.

The lineup includes Andi Van Dyke, Hazel Afrodite, Killabite, Lola Bido, Nikko the Nymph, Rocco Rose, Sherman, Squirt Mae, and Stabitha Christie. Lucifer Christmas will perform during the early show, while Mike Hawk is scheduled for the late performance. Bimbette, Crow Morbid, and Gnat will also perform.

The early show will feature a rotisserie chicken-eating competition, with sign-ups available at the door and limited space for participants. Organizers said the late show could also include the competition or a different surprise.

"And yes, the early show will feature a rotisserie chicken eating competition!" organizers wrote. "Maybe also the late show, though they may get a different surprise instead!"

The show draws its theme from Market Basket, the Tewksbury-based grocery chain that traces its history to 1917. The company operates 90 stores across Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, and Rhode Island. It is known throughout the region for its "More For Your Dollar" slogan and prepared food offerings, including its rotisserie chickens. The cabaret is independently organized and is not an official Market Basket event.

A portion of the evening will benefit Haley House, the West Roxbury Food Bank and the Allston-Brighton Food Bank. Monetary donations for the three organizations will also be accepted throughout the night.

Masks are encouraged, with N95 masks being provided by Boston COVID Action. Organizers said anyone found harassing attendees for wearing masks will be asked to leave without a refund. Tickets for the event are sold out.
