Well-known Boston Bar Closes After 3 Decades In Business

BOSTON, MA — A longtime downtown Boston bar has permanently closed after 30 years in business.

Hennessy's Bar at 25 Union St. announced the closure this week in a statement after serving its final customers on Tuesday.

"For three decades, Hennessy's has been so much more than a bar," ownership said in a statement. "It became a place where lifelong friendships were made, stories were shared, celebrations turned into traditions, and strangers became family."

The bar's final celebration came during the recent FIFA World Cup, when crowds packed Hennessy's to watch matches together one last time. The pub also became a popular gathering place for Scottish soccer supporters throughout the tournament.

"As we close this chapter, our hearts are overflowing," ownership said. "Thank you to every customer who pulled up a stool, every employee who made this place feel like home, and every friend who walked through our doors over the last three decades. You gave this place its soul."

Hennessy's was operated by Somers Boston Restaurants, which also owns Mr. Dooley's, Durty Nelly's, and the Green Dragon Tavern. The pub became known for its traditional Irish fare, live entertainment and wide selection of beer and whiskey, attracting both Boston residents and tourists for decades.

The business did not publicly provide a reason for its closure. However, according to a petition filed with the Boston Licensing Board, Hennessy's has applied to transfer its all-alcohol liquor license to Bar 23, a new restaurant planned for 11 Fan Pier Blvd. in the Seaport neighborhood. The Licensing Board and the Massachusetts Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission must still approve the transfer.

"While the lights may dim and the doors may close, the memories will never fade," the owners said. "They'll live on in every story that starts with, 'Remember that night at Hennessy's...'"

The owners concluded the announcement by thanking customers, employees and supporters, calling the opportunity to serve the Boston community over the past 30 years the honor of a lifetime.
