Brookline Police Sergeant Receives Statewide Mentoring Award

BROOKLINE, MA —Police Sergeant Julie McDonnell was recognized with a Spirit of Massachusetts Association of Women in Law Enforcement Award during a ceremony held last week.

McDonnell received the organization's Mentoring Award, which honors women in law enforcement who distinguish themselves through support and assistance to other women in the profession, development of programs or policies favorable to women, and service on committees or organizations that address issues affecting women in law enforcement.

According to the Brookline Police Department, the Spirit of MAWLE Awards recognize women who have gone above and beyond in areas including leadership, mentoring, courage, community service, excellence in performance, civilian achievement, lifetime achievement, and preservation of the organization's heritage.

McDonnell currently serves as a sergeant in the Brookline Police Department's Patrol Division. Before her promotion, she served as a detective and was recognized for her work in crisis intervention and mental health response. In 2022, she received a commendation from the Norfolk County Crisis Intervention Team for her efforts assisting individuals experiencing mental health crises and for being among the first Brookline officers to complete Crisis Intervention Team training.

The Massachusetts Association of Women in Law Enforcement said the mentoring award is presented to women who have demonstrated a commitment to helping other women succeed in the profession and advancing opportunities within the field.

The recognition adds to a history of honors for McDonnell from the organization. In 2018, she received a Spirit of MAWLE Award for Excellence in Performance.

The goal of the Massachusetts Association of Women in Law Enforcement is to recognize the exceptional accomplishments of women working in law enforcement and criminal justice throughout the Commonwealth.
