2 Injured In Fire At Brookline Business

BROOKLINE, MA — Two people are injured from a three-alarm fire that broke out Thursday morning, according to the Brookline Fire Department.

Crews responded to the scene on 211 and 213 Boylston St. at approximately 10:20 a.m. to find heavy smoke and flames emanating primarily from the first floor and basement of the three-story, mixed-use building where the East Coast Divers store is located. Brookline Communications Officer Christina Metcalf told Patch that both an employee of the business and a Brookline firefighter have sustained non-life-threatening injuries. According to Fire Chief John Sullivan, the firefighter's injury is a hand laceration.

"The loud boom/popping noises heard by neighbors were from the fire reaching compressed air tanks in the dive shop," Metcalf told Patch. "Brookline Fire investigators are being assisted by the Massachusetts State Fire Marshalls office to determine the cause and origin of the fire, which is unknown at this time."

The eastbound lane of Route 9 on Boylston Street was reopened shortly before 12 p.m., while the westbound side remains closed to traffic. The Cambridge Fire Department provided mutual aid on the scene.
