MIT Professor Dies Weeks After Cambridge Bicycle Crash

CAMBRIDGE, MA — An MIT professor has died nearly two weeks after being injured in a bicycle crash in Cambridge, the Middlesex District Attorney's Office announced.

Thomas Rose, 37, was involved in a crash with a motor vehicle at the intersection of Memorial Drive East and Massachusetts Avenue at approximately 6 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 21. Massachusetts State Police, Cambridge Police, and Cambridge Fire responded to the scene. Rose was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital following the crash and died from his injuries on Wednesday, Sept. 2.

The driver of the motor vehicle remained at the scene. No charges have been announced, and additional details surrounding the cause of the crash have not been revealed. The Middlesex District Attorney's Office is investigating the incident.

Rose was an assistant professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an expert in ancient metallurgy. He joined MIT in January as the university's POSCO Professor of Materials Science and was a member of the Center for Materials Research in Archaeology. Rose was preparing to teach his first courses at MIT this fall and was still putting the finishing touches on his laboratory.

Originally from Berlin, Germany, Rose received bachelor's and master's degrees from Goethe University Frankfurt before earning his doctorate in archaeology through a joint program involving Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel and Sapienza University of Rome in Italy. Before joining MIT, he held research positions in Germany. His work largely focused on ancient metallurgy and how early human societies produced and used metals such as copper and its alloys.

According to Cambridge Bicycle Safety, Rose is the fifth bicyclist or pedestrian to be fatally injured along Memorial Drive since 2014. The organization called for permanent safety improvements along the roadway following Rose's death.
