Canton Homes Evacuated After Gas Line Rupture

CANTON, MA — A gas line rupture prompted evacuations and an emergency response near Spring Lane and Chapman Street on Thursday.

The Canton Fire Department said a preliminary investigation found a 2-inch break. Homes along Spring Street were evacuated, and Eversource Energy crews responded to the scene shortly after 9 a.m.

Canton Fire Chief Jamie Meier said it was an active emergency situation and asked motorists to avoid the area and use Washington Street as a detour.

Utility crews later shut off gas to the area, and residents were cleared to return to their homes shortly after 12:30 p.m., according to the fire department.

Gas line repairs remained ongoing Thursday, but officials said there was no ongoing danger to residents.

Chapman Street reopened to vehicular traffic, while traffic on Spring Street remained restricted until repairs were complete.
