Lowell Blaze Spreads To Numerous Buildings: Reports

The fire spread to a half dozen buildings, according to reports.

LOWELL, MA — Fires spread to a half dozen buildings in Lowell Tuesday afternoon, according to reports.

"Six buildings on three different streets went up in flames during windy conditions in Lowell Tuesday afternoon, leaving 25 people without a home," a 7 News Boston story said.

The first fire started on Bridge Street shortly before 3 p.m., per Boston 25 News.

"Lowell Fire Chief Phillip Charron said because the wind was blowing up Bridge Street, it carried fire and embers to two adjacent streets, Wachusett and May Street," according to Boston 25 News.

"The wind was blowing from Bridge Street up towards the hill and it carried fire and embers up over the three-story building and two adjacent streets, Wachusett Street and also May Street which is two blocks up," Lowell Fire Chief Phillip Charron told CBS.

No residents were injured in the fire, according to the Lowell Sun.

"The city opened the Lowell Senior Center at 276 Broadway St. as an emergency shelter for anyone impacted by the fire," the Sun reported.

While none of the residents were injured, two cats were killed in the Bridge Street blaze, per WCVB.

"We're doing everything we can to try to make sure that we protect our properties," Lowell City Councilor Corey Robinson told WCVB. "These are problems that we all need to be aware of, that when you put houses on top of each other, these kinds of situations happen. One fire ends up destroying several structures. It really challenges the first responders."
