All are invited to this opening reception for the exhibition Biblically Speaking. Enjoy the exhibition, light refreshments, book sales and artists' talk. Please RSVP to help us plan.

Biblically Speaking is a collaboration by Elias Lieberman, Rabbi Emeritus of Falmouth Jewish Congregation and photographer Mark Chester of Falmouth and Woods Hole, respectively.  The exhibition and accompanying book consist of a citation from Torah and commentary by Rabbi Lieberman paired with a photograph from Chester’s archive spanning 55 years.Reverent Nell Field, Minister at the Waquoit Congregational Church, has written a foreword to the book, which will be available for sale at the reception (cash or check only).
The exhibition will remain on display through the month of June. Again, please send an email in advance to coordinate your visit at a time when the exhibition is accessible (fjcoffice@comcast.net). Thank you.

Biblically Speaking: Exhibition and Opening Reception

Artwork by Philip Dutra will be displayed at The Gallery at FCTV from May 4 through May 29. You missed the reception, but you can still stop in for a casual stroll through coastal scenes and nature trails.
Raised on Cape Cod, Philip Dutra draws on a lifetime of coastal experience to create paintings that emphasize clarity, restraint, and the natural beauty of the sea. Before committing fully to art, he worked in the boating industry, an experience that deepened his understanding of water, movement, and light—elements that now define his work. His background in architectural engineering also informs his sense of structure and composition.
Dutra’s paintings reflect a lifelong connection to the shoreline. Having spent decades immersed in the coastal environment, he finds continual inspiration in its shifting colors and moods. His approach centers on simplifying complex scenes, allowing essential forms and atmosphere to emerge without excess detail.
For Dutra, art is both personal expression and a way to evoke shared memories. He aims to create work that resonates emotionally while maintaining technical discipline. When faced with creative challenges, he steps away, often turning to quiet reflection or movement to regain perspective.
He believes artistic growth comes from persistence, observation, and a willingness to learn through process. The coast remains both his subject and his refuge—a constant source of inspiration that continues to shape his work and vision.
The Gallery at FCTV is located within the Falmouth Community Media Center, which is at 310E Dillingham Ave., easily accessible by Rose Morin Lane. FCTV and Gallery Hours: Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu: 10-8pm, Fri: 10am-6pm. Sat: Closed, Sun: 12-8pm.

Globalizing the American Revolution

When we think of the American Revolution, we often picture a parochial drama: thirteen colonies squaring off against the British Crown in a spirited bid for independence. But this version of the story is only half the truth—and perhaps not even the most interesting half. In this riveting program, historian and author Richard Bell invites audiences to rediscover the Revolution as a world war that unleashed chaos, opportunity, and transformation across six continents. From the sugar fields of the Caribbean to the court of the King of Mysore, from refugee camps on the Canadian frontier to political uprisings in Sierra Leone and Peru, the war that gave birth to the United States was never simply America’s own. It was a seismic global event that redrew maps, toppled hierarchies, catalyzed migration, and accelerated new movements for liberty—and for empire.
In this program, Bell traces the far-flung reverberations of the war through the lives of the people it displaced, empowered, or destroyed. Participants will encounter a Native matriarch struggling to preserve a transatlantic military alliance, a Prussian officer reinventing himself in a foreign army, and a Boston schoolteacher shipwrecked thousands of miles from home. Along the way, the Bell explores how the Revolution stirred a transoceanic refugee crisis, ignited antislavery activism, and inspired uprisings from Ireland to India. The program offers a bold new framework for understanding the Revolutionary War not as a tidy founding moment but as a sprawling, high-stakes struggle fought on land and sea, shaped by commerce, diplomacy, propaganda, and contingency. This is the American Revolution as you’ve never seen it before: complex, global, and astonishingly relevant to the modern world.

Author <a href="https://www.natashawilliamswriter.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Natasha Williams</a> speaks at West Falmouth Library on Sunday, May 24 3-5 p.m. She will perform a reading from her acclaimed memoir <a href="https://library.clamsnet.org/Record/609821?searchId=37723169&amp;recordIndex=1&amp;page=1&amp;referred=resultIndex" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">The Parts of Him I Kept</a>, followed by a talk moderated by West Falmouth Library Executive Director Molly Akin.&nbsp;Book signing and sale in partnership with Eight Cousins to follow. Free and open to all. Co-presented with <a href="https://namicapecod.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">NAMI Cape Cod &amp; The Islands</a>.
The Parts of Him I Kept is an intimate account of a daughter’s coming of age in the face of her father’s schizophrenic unraveling. Williams investigates the limits of our medical and cultural understanding of schizophrenia while chronicling the shared burden and benefits of caring for a mentally ill family member. In the tradition of Ocean Vuong’s On Earth We are Briefly Gorgeous, Michael Greenberg’s Hurry Down Sunshine and Robert Kolker’s Hidden Valley Road, The Parts of Him I Kept asks us to consider the ways mental illness is as much a social issue as a biological condition.
Natasha Williams has a MA from University of Pennsylvania and in the summer of 2020, she accepted a spot with the Bread Loaf School of English and attended the Bread Loaf Writers Conference 2023.

Sea Stars Early Learning Center

Sea Stars Early Learning Center offers a balanced program that incorporates play-based learning, structured lessons, and physical activities. Children are encouraged to explore their interests, whether through music, art, science, or outdoor exploration. There’s a focus on developmental milestones, including fine motor skills, communication, and social interaction. The facility focuses on helping children develop strong social skills through group activities, games, and cooperative learning. There’s an emphasis on emotional intelligence, teaching kids how to manage their feelings and resolve conflicts peacefully. Our amazing helps kids learn to share, collaborate, and support one another, fostering a sense of community. The facility embraces children from all backgrounds and is sensitive to cultural differences, making sure all children feel accepted and valued. The facility features a large, secure outdoor play area with age-appropriate equipment. Children spend plenty of time outdoors, engaging in physical play and exploring nature. There may also be gardening activities. The building is designed with child safety in mind, featuring soft corners, non-toxic materials, and secure fencing around outdoor areas. Access points are monitored and locked to ensure only authorized individuals can enter. There’s a first aid kit and trained staff on hand at all times to handle any emergencies. The classrooms and play areas are spotless, with an abundance of natural light streaming in through large windows. The space is well-organized, with age-appropriate toys, books, and learning materials accessible to children. There’s a cozy reading nook, art stations, and sensory play areas where kids can explore their creativity. Our staff is certified in child development, first aid, and CPR, but they also have a genuine passion for working with children. Melissa Anderson and Leigh-Ellen Ferreira are two Falmouth natives who have spent many years working with children.
