Patriots Releasing Wide Receiver Stefon Diggs: Report

FOXBOROUGH, MA — The New England Patriots are releasing wide receiver Stefon Diggs, according to a report from Yahoo Sports.

The organization informed Diggs on Wednesday of its decision to officially release him at the start of the new NFL league year on Wednesday, March 11, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport said.

The 32-year-old veteran played just one season of his three-year, $63.5 million contract that New England signed him to back in March of last year. Only $22.6 million of the contract was guaranteed. Diggs's contract was slated to account for $26.5 million against the team’s salary cap in 2026 after counting for just $10.5 million against the cap in 2025. His deal carries a $9.7 million dead cap hit in 2026 and a $4 million dead cap hit in 2027, which the team will take on one he is officially let go.

Diggs had a very productive 2025 regular season with the Patriots, in which he became the team's primary pass-catcher totaling 85 receptions for more than 1,000 yards after tearing his ACL in 2024. However, his performance became temporarily overshadowed by legal troubles that came about in December and remain ongoing. In addition, the four-time Pro Bowler struggled against the NFL’s top defenses in the postseason, totaling 14 catches for 110 yards in four playoff games.

The Patriots will now look to replace the production of Diggs either through free agency, the NFL Draft, or the trade market. Diggs will soon be free to sign with another team and continue his career.

Diggs was drafted in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft out of the University of Maryland by the Minnesota Vikings. He has put together a borderline-hall-of-fame career throughout the last decade playing for four organizations. The Maryland native is a father of six. His most recent child, whom he shares with rapper Cardi B, was born in November.
