Two Employees Hospitalized After Back Of MBTA Shuttle Bus Catches Fire

Less than a day after the MBTA declared a month-long shutdown of the Orange Line, a shuttle bus near JP catches fire.

The MBTA says multiple employees attempted to extinguish the growing flames but were unsuccessful, sending in the Boston Fire Department, who were able to knock down the fire from the bus yard.

JAMAICA PLAIN, MA — Two MBTA employees were taken to the hospital Thursday afternoon after the back of a bus caught fire in the middle of record-breaking heat in Jamaica Plain.

An out-of-service bus returned to the MBTA Arborway bus yard near Forest Hills around 3 p.m. when flames were seen coming out of the rear compartment of the bus, an MBTA spokesperson said.

The MBTA says multiple employees attempted to extinguish the growing flames but were unsuccessful, sending in the Boston Fire Department, who were able to knock down the fire from the bus yard.

Two MBTA employees were taken to the hospital to be evaluated for possible smoke inhalation, WCVB reported, adding that one employee has since been released.

This fire comes in the wake of the announcement of a 30-day shutdown of the Orange Line, meaning all Orange Line users must either use the Commuter Rail or shuttle buses.

Just last month, an Orange Line train caught fire over Mystic River in Somerville. The panic caused passengers to kick out the windows in an effort to escape, and one person even jumped off the bridge into the river below, the MBTA said.

The cause of the shuttle bus fire remains under investigation.
