New Shade Shelters Added To Malden Park

MALDEN, MA — Two new shade shelters have been installed over the picnic tables at Trafton Park through a donation from the Adelaide Breed Bayrd Foundation, Mayor Gary Christenson announced.

The new structures are intended to provide relief from the summer sun for caregivers watching children in the park's tot lot while also creating a more comfortable gathering space for families, friends and other visitors.

To help preserve the structures, the Malden Department of Public Works will remove the canopy covers each winter and reinstall them when the weather gets warmer. City officials said the seasonal maintenance is intended to extend the lifespan of the shelters.

The project was funded by the Adelaide Breed Bayrd Foundation, a Malden nonprofit established in 1927 by former Malden Evening News publisher Frank A. Bayrd in memory of his mother. The foundation provides grants and scholarships benefiting organizations and students in Malden and surrounding communities, with funding supporting hospitals, libraries, youth programs, social service organizations and cultural activities.

Trafton Park, located at the corner of Granite and Jacob streets, is the latest city park to receive improvements.
