MARLBOROUGH, MA — A hospital in Marlborough has received a major gift to support its emergency department renovation and expansion.

UMass Memorial Medical Center’s Marlborough Campus was awarded $125,000 from St. Mary’s Credit Union, the health care system announced on Tuesday. The funding will be spread evenly from 2026 to 2030 and will go toward work that began in October 2025 and is expected to finish by the end of 2026.

A related Specialty Care Center is expected to open in early 2027, according to UMass Memorial Health.

The emergency department project aims to help the hospital meet rising demand and reduce wait times. Plans call for nearly doubling the number of patient rooms from 13 to 23, along with new treatment rooms, rooms designed for individuals of size and two new trauma rooms.

The Specialty Care Center will support expanded access to chronic disease management and specialty services for Marlborough and surrounding communities, according to the health system.

“St. Mary’s Credit Union is a valuable and longtime supporter of UMass Memorial Medical Center – Marlborough Campus,” UMass Memorial Medical Center President Justin Precourt said in a statement. “This $125,000 gift will help us continue to prioritize the health and well-being of our shared community.”

Jim Petkewich, president and CEO of St. Mary’s Credit Union, said the gift reflects the credit union’s broader role in the region.

“Our mission extends far beyond banking. It’s about investing in the health, well-being and future of our communities in Massachusetts, both physically and financially,” Petkewich said in a statement. “We appreciate the importance of community hospitals and are incredibly proud to support the renovations and expansion at UMass Memorial Medical Center – Marlborough Campus.”

UMass Memorial Health described the gift as part of a decades-long philanthropic partnership between the credit union and the Marlborough campus.

This comes after the hospital campus recieved another large donation earlier this year.

In March, UMass Memorial Health got a $100,000 gift from Main Street Group Foundation, the charitable arm of Main Street Bank. That funding will also go toward the emergency room expansion and renovation.
