Marlborough Police Warn Of Utility Payment Phone Scam

MARLBOROUGH, MA — Police are warning residents about suspicious callers demanding hundreds of dollars to keep their electricity on.

Marlborough residents reported receiving calls from people claiming to represent Direct Energy and demanding immediate payments of about $900, the Marlborough Police Department announced Wednesday. The callers claimed residents had verbally enrolled in an energy program and threatened to disconnect their electricity within two days if they did not pay, police said.

The callers pressured residents to pay immediately and did not provide a callback number, police said.

Police advised residents not to give personal or payment information to unsolicited callers. Anyone who receives such a call should hang up and contact their utility provider using the telephone number listed on a bill or the company’s official website.

The department also encouraged residents to share the warning with relatives, friends and older adults who may be targeted.

Anyone who believes they were the victim of a scam should contact the Marlborough Police Department.
