Medford Deploys Millions In State And Federal Funds For Road Repairs

MEDFORD, MA — The city is deploying more than $3.5 million in federal and state funding to repair several roads and sidewalks across the city, Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn announced. Using the 2026 Pavement and Sidewalk Evaluation Report, the Engineering Department identified nine locations for extensive road and sidewalk repair work this spring.

The locations are Willis Avenue, Bowen Avenue, Golden Avenue, Arlington Street, Brookings Street, Tainter Street, East Border Circle and Park Street. Sidewalk work is also planned for Spring Street at Central Avenue.

“Repairing and restoring our roads and sidewalks is a top priority for our Engineering and DPW team but it takes significant funding and resources,” Lungo-Koehn said. “These costs keep rising but by leveraging federal and state funds, we’re able to tackle some of our most highly trafficked areas while also implementing more cost-effective and efficient ways of handling preventative maintenance.”

The city said the pavement and sidewalk evaluation report is a key planning tool for addressing what it described as a severe backlog in pavement and infrastructure work. According to the announcement, many of the projects highlighted in the report require extensive planning and coordination.

In addition to the city-funded work, National Grid will conduct road repaving on 10 streets this spring construction season, according to city policy. Those streets are Higgins Avenue, Wheeler Avenue, Medford Street from Albion Street to Broadway, Central Avenue, Sunnyside Terrace, Belleview Terrace, Hicks Avenue, Earl Avenue, Westwood Road and Washington Street.

The city is also conducting crack sealing preventative maintenance on 21 roadways, where narrow roadway cracks are repaired with liquid asphalt to keep water and other liquids from infiltrating the surface. 4th Street, Carolina Street, College Avenue, Forest Street, Fulton Street, Glenwood Avenue, Grove Street, Henry Street, Kenmere Road, Mc Donald Road, Roosevelt Road, Sherwood Road, Sprague Court, Stanley Avenue, Stearns Avenue, Vassar Street, Warner Street, Willard Avenue and Willis Avenue are the streets that will receive crack sealing. The list also includes Winthrop Street from Boston Avenue to Mystic Valley Parkway.
