Medford Opens Cooling Locations Amid Record Heat In MA

This comes as "extreme heat" is expected to feel like more than 110 degrees Fahrenheit in some areas.

MEDFORD, MA — The city has designated three cooling centers this week as hot weather settles across Massachusetts, offering residents air-conditioned spaces to escape the heat.

The Medford Police Department Community Room, Medford Senior Center, and Medford Public Library are available as cooling centers, with the police department community room open around the clock. The city encouraged residents who need relief from the heat to take advantage of the facilities.

The National Weather Service has warned of dangerous heat across much of the state this week, with heat index values expected to exceed 100 degrees in some areas. The hot and humid conditions are expected to continue through Thursday before temperatures begin to ease heading into the holiday weekend.

The city also reminded residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the heat, and check on neighbors who may be more vulnerable to heat-related illness. Officials noted that older adults, young children and people with underlying medical conditions are at greater risk during periods of extreme heat.

  • Open 24 hours

Medford Senior Center (101 Riverside Ave.)

  • Monday through Friday: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Medford Public Library (111 High St.)

  • Monday through Thursday: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Friday: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Saturday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
