Indivisible Melrose Wakefield and Beyond invites the community to participate in a group read of the graphic novel March, Vol. 1, Rep. John Lewis’s memoir of the Civil Rights Movement. Indivisible MWB will host a Zoom discussion of the book, with March artist Nate Powell as a special guest, on Thursday, July 16, at 7:30 p.m. This comes just ahead of the Good Trouble Weekend of Action, which marks the anniversary of Rep. Lewis’s passing, and everyone is encouraged to participate in one of the local events.
In order to participate, please register at the Mobilize link and the Zoom link will be sent to you before the event. https://www.mobilize.us/dashboard/indivisible/event/980267/
The week after the book club discussion, Indivisible Melrose Wakefield and Beyond will host an in-person meeting for anyone interested in taking action to protect election integrity and voting rights. The group will discuss and decide upon an action plan. More information will be available soon.
Vol. 1 of March is available at the Melrose Public Library, both in hard copies and on the hoopla digital service, and can be ordered from Molly’s Bookstore in Melrose. Signed and sketched copies can also be ordered directly from Nate Powell at https://www.seemybrotherdance.org/shop. Originally published as three volumes, and now also available as an omnibus, March is a first-person account of the desegregation of the Nashville lunch counters, the Freedom Rides, the March on Washington, and the campaign for the Voting Rights Act. As such, it is important both as history and as a resource for those doing organizing in the present day.
