MA Candy Maker Eyes Milford Expansion

Sky Nutro expects to create 120 permanent full-time jobs in Milford.

MILFORD, MA — A candy company could be moving its headquarters from Southbridge to Milford after its leadership went before the Select Board on Tuesday.

Sky Nutro appeared before the Select Board on Monday to outline plans to lease 93,000 square feet at 5-7 Industrial Road, where the company said it would move its headquarters and manufacturing operations as it outgrows its current 22,000-square-foot facility in Southbridge.

During the meeting, the board unanimously approved a motion authorizing a letter of support to the state as the company seeks a tax credit tied to the project.

Sky Nutro, founded in 2021, makes gummy candy, fruit snacks and functional nutrition products. The company says it focuses on reduced-sugar formulations and healthier food options for the food production industry.

President and CEO Nate Spock told the board the business has grown alongside demand from established brands and now needs more space.

“The specific mission was that we weren’t just out there to create sugar-filled products with petroleum-based colors,” Spock said during Tuesday's meeting. “We have a whole host of well-known brands that are incumbents to us and it’s forced us to start to look for more real estate to support additional products.”

Spock said Sky Nutro’s clients include Hi-Chew, General Mills, SmartSweets, Bazooka and more.

Economic Impact, Hiring Plans

Sky Nutro said the project includes an estimated $12 million investment in building renovations and personal property.

While the company currently has 25 full-time employees, it expects to create 120 permanent full-time jobs in Milford, with estimated salaries ranging from $75,000 to $90,000.

Spock said the company will offer incentives to existing employees who relocate to Milford, as Sky Nutro does not plan to keep its Southbridge facility beyond the end of 2026.

The company said it expects to need skilled workers, including engineers and additional executive-level staff. Hiring is expected to begin in July.

During Tuesday's discussion, Spock also said Sky Nutro wants to be involved in the community through efforts such as internships and co-op opportunities with local students.

What's Next?

One of Sky Nutro’s next steps is applying for a state tax credit. A municipal support letter is required as part of that process, and company officials said the application deadline is at the end of May, with final state review expected in June.
