West Nile Virus Found In Milford Mosquitoes, Spraying Scheduled

MILFORD, MA — Milford health officials are planning mosquito spraying Friday night after West Nile virus was detected in town.

The virus was confirmed in mosquitoes collected from a surveillance trap in the Beach Street Extension area, according to the Milford Board of Health. The Central Massachusetts Mosquito Control Project will begin truck-mounted spraying after 8 p.m. Friday.

Residents who see a spray truck approaching should go indoors and close windows facing the street for about 20 minutes, officials said.

The planned spraying area includes:

Acorn Circle, Alden Street, Archer Avenue, Baker Slip, Beach Street, Beach Street Extension, Bear Hill Road, Bragg Slip, Canali Drive, Cemetery Street, Central Street, Charles River Street, Charles Street, Chestnut Street, Christina Road, Claflin Street, Court Square, Court Street, Depot Street, East Street, East Street Extension, Fairfield Court, Finley Court, Forest Street, Frank Drive, Franklin Street, Front Street, Fruit Street Extension, Goodrich Court, Grove Street, Hayward Street, Hillside Avenue, Jefferson Street, Johnson Court, Main Street, Moschilli Circle, Mount Pleasant Street, Myrtle Street, National Street, North Bow Street, Orchard Street, Park Terrace, Pheasant Circle, Pond Street, Poplar Street, Pouliot Street, Railroad Street, River Street, Saint John Lane, Sheldon Alley, South Bow Street, South Cedar Street, South Central Street, South Main Street, South Union Street, Spring Street, Suzette Road, Vernon Street and Whitney Street.

Catch basins in the area will also be treated to prevent the emergence of mosquito species that carry West Nile virus. The Board of Health said it has placed additional surveillance traps.

Officials advised residents to use insect repellent according to label directions, wear clothing that covers the skin and consider limiting outdoor activities between dusk and dawn. Residents should also drain standing water and repair damaged window or door screens.
