First Look At Newton Crossing As Development Prepares For Leasing

NEWTON, MA — New renderings are offering a first look at the apartments, amenities, and public spaces planned for the Newton Crossing development as the project prepares to begin leasing, according to developer Garden Communities.

Newton Crossing is a mixed-use project located at 1165 Washington Street. Upon completion, the community will feature 292 rental apartments and approximately 8,000 square feet of retail space. The site is situated approximately one-half mile from the West Newton MBTA commuter rail station. Garden Communities said leasing for the development is now expected to begin this fall.

"We are excited to share the first visuals of Newton Crossing, marking another milestone in the development process," Garden Communities Managing Director Eli Pechthold said. "We look forward to kicking off leasing and introducing prospective renters to the dynamic living experience planned at Newton Crossing."

The development consists of three mixed-use buildings offering studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom floor plans. The apartments will include loft-style windows, while select units will feature private balconies and terraces, and some one-bedroom floor plans will include dens. Community amenities will include a fitness center, sauna, golf simulator, game room, conference rooms, rooftop terrace, private courtyard, work pods, and other lounge spaces. The property will also provide garage parking equipped with electric vehicle charging stations. Outdoor areas will include a promenade and access to Cheesecake Brook that will be open to the public.

Of the development's 292 apartments, 73 are designated as income-restricted units. Sixty-three are reserved for households earning up to 80 percent of the area median income, while another 10 are reserved for households earning up to 50 percent. A housing lottery for those apartments was held this summer after applications closed in August.

The project was approved by the Newton Zoning Board of Appeals under Chapter 40B in 2021. It was originally proposed by Mark Development before Garden Communities later took over the project. Garden Communities previously said earlier this year that initial marketing and leasing efforts were expected to begin in the spring.

The development is located near shops and restaurants in West Newton, as well as a Trader Joe's and the Massachusetts Turnpike. Garden Communities is based in Short Hills, New Jersey, and has been working to expand its presence in the Greater Boston area.
